The heatwave has worsened the quality and yield of maize crops in the European Union, with only 62% of them in good condition. Yields in Bulgaria are expected to be the lowest in decades. The International Grains Council estimates that the EU will import 21 million tons of maize, making it the world's second biggest buyer. Despite low prices on grain exchanges in the US and Brazil, dry conditions persist in parts of Europe, highlighting the vulnerability of agriculture to climate change.
