Scientists warn that climate change is amplifying the drought this year in Europe, against a backdrop of extreme temperatures that are reducing water reserves.

France is facing the prospect of its weakest corn harvest in the last 50 years, while Romania has restricted farmers' access to water for irrigation. In the Netherlands, a water shortage has been declared, and seven islands in Greece have entered a state of emergency due to drought.

Although the lack of precipitation between April and June was not directly caused by climate change, the extreme heat has accelerated the evaporation of water from the soil. Conditions favorable to evaporation were 80 times more frequent in Western Europe and 40 times in Eastern Europe compared to the pre-industrial period. Scientists warn that agricultural soil droughts are now five times more frequent in Western Europe and eleven times in Eastern Europe due to climate change.
