Johann Wadephul, the German Foreign Minister, began a two-day visit to China on Monday, emphasizing the importance of fair and rules-based trade. Although he initially planned the trip for October, it was postponed due to tensions related to Taiwan. Wadephul stated that Germany considers China the most important trading partner and intends to expand this relationship. During meetings with Chinese officials, he discussed the restrictions imposed by China on the export of rare minerals, essential for the automotive, technology, and defense industries.
Wadephul also mentioned that Beijing has not been convinced to grant general export licenses for these minerals. Additionally, he may address China's support for Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, despite Beijing's official position of neutrality. This visit comes shortly after Wadephul was forced to postpone his first visit due to the lack of confirmation for meetings with key leaders in China.
