The German Ministry of Defense announced that Germany and the Netherlands will establish a joint NATO tactical command, named 1GNC, aimed at coordinating forces on the eastern flank of the Alliance, especially in Estonia and Latvia. This new command center will enhance NATO's response capability and support the deterrence of Russia. 1GNC will be able to coordinate up to 50,000 troops and will have responsibilities such as planning military exercises and leading forces in the event of conflict.
The unit, known as the German-Dutch Corps, is based in Münster, Germany, and is active in NATO missions. The new command will provide NATO with a faster response and will demonstrate the commitment of Germany and the Netherlands to the defense of the eastern flank. Additionally, the Baltic Sentry program has been launched to strengthen the security of underwater infrastructure in the region, in the context of increasing hybrid threats.
