George Simion protested on Wednesday in front of the European Parliament in Brussels, alongside more than 70 supporters of Călin Georgescu. The demonstrators challenged the court decision ordering, on September 29, the pretrial detention of the former presidential candidate for 30 days.
Subsequently, on Tuesday, October 13, the Bucharest Tribunal decided to replace pretrial detention with house arrest. George Simion described the ruling as “also an abuse,” but a victory for the protests, a small victory for Romanians”.
The protest in Brussels continues the demonstrations organized for more than two weeks in front of the Central Detention Facility in Bucharest. The largest mobilization took place on October 3, when approximately 1,000 people gathered to express their support for Georgescu.
George Simion posted the message “Freedom for Călin Georgescu!” on Facebook and invited leaders of European Parliament parties to the protest. Representatives of a Belgian opposition party were among the speakers. AUR members criticized both the cancellation of the 2024 presidential elections and the pretrial detention measure.
