Former USR leader Cătălin Drulă criticized on Wednesday the political agreement under which the PNL decided to support the Luca Niculescu government in Parliament, even though the Liberals will not join the executive. Drulă argues that negotiations to form the new Cabinet were merely a step toward PSD’s return to government.
In a public message, the former USR president accused the head of state of abandoning reform in favor of an agreement with the Social Democrats. He said that “PSD is reconnecting its people to resources” and described the future executive as “the PSD–Nicușor Dan government.”
Drulă also directly attacked PNL leader Ilie Bolojan, claiming that he agreed to provide parliamentary support for the Cabinet as a result of political pressure. According to the former USR leader, “the blackmail against Bolojan worked.”
The criticism marks the first public rift between the PNL and USR after the government fell. Until Wednesday, the two parties had held similar positions on continuing reforms, fiscal responsibility and rejecting a form of government dominated by PSD. USR has maintained its refusal to vote for an executive that includes Social Democrat ministers.
At the end of his message, Drulă urged USR supporters not to give up the political fight, despite the disappointment caused by the agreement between the parties.
