More than 300 supporters of Călin Georgescu gathered on Wednesday in front of the Central Detention Center in the capital, one day after the former presidential candidate was placed in preventive detention for 30 days. The protesters are calling for his release and challenging the court’s decision.
The demonstrators chanted “Freedom,” “Călin Georgescu president,” and “The second round, back,” a slogan associated with the demand to resume the second round of the 2024 presidential election. Some participants brought a cross similar in size to those used in cemeteries, bearing messages critical of the justice system.
The protest is taking place following the decision made on Tuesday, September 29, by the court’s panel resolving the disagreement. The judges ordered the preventive detention for 30 days of Călin Georgescu and Ionel Rusen, following the appeal filed by DIICOT.
