Hundreds of Călin Georgescu’s supporters protested late into the night outside the Central Detention Center in Bucharest, challenging the measure imposed against the former presidential candidate. The number of demonstrators subsequently fell significantly, however, after more than a thousand people had gathered outside the institution the previous evening and chanted late into the night.
From September 29, when Georgescu was detained, until the previous day, authorities issued more than 50 fines for violations of the law, totaling approximately 52,000 lei. The protests were accompanied by incidents, and the activist known as the Dacian Standard-Bearer, one of Georgescu’s supporters, was placed in preventive detention for 30 days. He is being investigated for assaulting a public official after allegedly striking a gendarme in the back while the officer was on duty.
Children were also present at the demonstrations, prompting a report to Child Protection Services. According to the information presented, Călin Georgescu was arrested on Tuesday and accused of defrauding a businessman of more than one million euros. The case and the measures imposed remain under the authorities’ scrutiny.
