Approximately 2,000 supporters of Călin Georgescu gathered this evening in front of the Central Arrest Facility in Bucharest, calling for the release of the former presidential candidate. The demonstration is taking place on the sixth consecutive day of protests, which began on September 29.
Călin Georgescu was placed in preventive detention on Tuesday for 30 days, by court decision. The former candidate is being investigated by DIICOT prosecutors in a case involving offenses such as forming an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences.
The Bucharest Gendarmerie announced that it is keeping dialogue teams in the area, which are in constant discussion with participants and explaining to them the importance of declaring the protest and having an organizer. The law enforcement forces are implementing the measures while also taking into account the residential nature of the area.
Several residential buildings are located near the Central Arrest Facility, and the authorities must ensure residents' access, as well as the normal flow of traffic. The Gendarmerie had previously released reports on the measures ordered and any sanctions imposed in connection with the demonstrations.
