Călin Georgescu’s supporters gathered for the 11th consecutive night outside Central Detention Facility in Bucharest, where they are taking part in a rally dedicated to the former presidential candidate. The protesters are chanting slogans, waving flags and holding placards bearing messages such as “Călin Georgescu is being politically persecuted” and “Inconvenient voices cannot be silenced with handcuffs.”
Georgescu was placed in preventive detention more than a week ago in a case concerning an alleged fraud offense, with estimated damages of €1.1 million.
Meanwhile, DIICOT has continued, for the fourth consecutive day, its digital searches of devices seized from the home of Călin and Cristela Georgescu. Cristela Georgescu criticized the way the checks are being carried out, saying she was forced to see photographs of her own children on the investigators’ screens.
According to the court’s reasoning regarding the preventive detention, obtained by Mediafax, investigators are tracing the €1.1 million, which they claim was received from businessman Răzvan Leu. In exchange for the money, Georgescu allegedly promised to facilitate €6 million in financing. The allegations are to be clarified during the investigation.
