George Simion reacted on Tuesday after the Bucharest Tribunal decided to replace Călin Georgescu’s pre-trial detention with house arrest. The AUR leader called the ruling “also an abuse,” but said that it also represents “a victory for the protests” and “a small victory for Romanians.”
“House arrest? Still an abuse, but a victory for the protests, a small victory for Romanians,” George Simion wrote on Facebook, shortly after the court’s decision was announced.
The Bucharest Tribunal ruled that the pre-trial detention measure could be replaced with a more lenient one. The ruling was handed down by Judge Vlad Andriescu, the same magistrate who had previously rejected an arrest request filed by prosecutors.
Călin Georgescu was not released immediately, as prosecutors have 48 hours to challenge the decision. DIICOT announced that it would file an appeal.
Georgescu has been in pre-trial detention since September 29, in a case in which he is accused of having defrauded a businessman of 1.1 million euros. His request was examined after he was brought on Monday from the Central Detention Center to the Bucharest Tribunal.
