AUR President George Simion announced on Friday that a protest will be held in Brussels on October 14, at Place du Luxembourg, in front of the European Parliament, in support of Călin Georgescu. The decision comes after the former presidential candidate was placed in preventive detention for 30 days, following a final ruling by the Bucharest Court of Appeal.
Georgescu is the subject of a case in which DIICOT prosecutors accuse him of allegedly defrauding a businessman of 1.1 million euros. In a video message posted on Facebook, Simion urged his supporters to attend both the demonstrations announced across the country and the rally in Brussels.
The AUR leader mentioned protests at the Central Detention Center, in Baia Mare and in Suceava, and accused the authorities of using state institutions to intimidate political opponents. He also announced that the party is providing free legal assistance to people who claim to be facing abuses.
Simion said that elections in Romania must be organized and decided by Romanians and mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin in his statements. AUR presents the protest in Brussels as an action in support of Călin Georgescu and the right to protest.
