On Wednesday morning, a large fire broke out at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, Murcia region, Spain. The flames were observed on the terrace of the fifth floor, and over 30 calls were made to the emergency service 112, around 07:30. Firefighters urgently evacuated patients and medical staff, and the city's mayor, Noelia Arroyo, confirmed the evacuation of four floors, without reporting any casualties.
Images captured by witnesses show the fire spreading on the facade of the building, generating a thick cloud of smoke. The President of the Murcia Region, Fernando López Miras, described the fire as "very dramatic" and mentioned that patients from the affected wards are being moved to safer areas, including other nearby hospitals. Firefighters continue to work to extinguish the fire, and local police have recommended avoiding the area to facilitate the intervention of emergency teams. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
