Anita Orban filed a criminal complaint against Peter Szijjarto over private flights that allegedly cost the Hungarian state an additional €10.9 million

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Anita Orban filed a criminal complaint on Tuesday against her predecessor, Peter Szijjarto, and his team, accusing them of frequent and costly use of private flights between 2022 and 2026.

According to the minister, travel on private charter planes or military aircraft cost on average nearly six times more than business-class travel on scheduled flights. The difference is estimated at approximately 4 billion forints, equivalent to €10.9 million.

Anita Orban said the documents examined point to possible mismanagement of public funds and that the ministry’s former leadership could be held responsible for the damage caused. The complaint is part of a series of measures by the new government, presented as an anti-corruption campaign.

Former Prime Minister Viktor Orban rejected the corruption allegations. His spokesman, Bertalan Havasi, told Reuters that Peter Szijjarto’s flights complied with government decrees and that the travel arrangements were efficient. He accused the new administration of politically motivated attacks.
