In recent weeks, Hungary has become the focus of a series of investigations targeting figures from Viktor Orban’s time in government. The interim prosecutor general requested that Prime Minister Peter Magyar and two former ministers have their immunity lifted, and Parliament approved the measures, paving the way for criminal cases, including over alleged embezzlement and bribery.
After their immunity was lifted, two former ministers in Orban’s government were detained on suspicion of corruption, and the investigations were presented as the first criminal cases targeting former senior members of cabinets from the past 16 years. At the same time, actions were also taken over alleged irregularities involving public spending: Magyar’s government filed a criminal complaint over the “deficient” management of more than 4 billion forints spent on social media communications during the Orban era.
