A disaster occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the gold mine in Zamboyé, located about 50 km from the town of Baboua, on the border between Cameroon and the Central African Republic. According to statements from Cédric Mbango, a local miner, the ground completely collapsed, burying numerous people. At least 100 people have died as a result of this tragic accident.
Collapses are common in mines in this region, where rich deposits are often exploited illegally, without oversight from the authorities. This is not the first tragedy of this kind; in June, a similar collapse at the gold mine in Bé-Mbari led to dozens of deaths. Local authorities face major challenges in managing safety in these mines, which endangers the lives of miners.
