At least 30 people have died following the collapse of a landfill in Guinea.

At least 30 people have died after a massive pile of waste collapsed at the largest landfill in the Guinean capital, Conakry, following heavy rains.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at the Dar es Salam dump, where the garbage heap fell over nearby shanties. Rescue teams searched for survivors among the rubble, and six seriously injured individuals were transported to the hospital.

Additionally, several homes were destroyed. The landfill, which serves a city with a population of two million people, was scheduled to be closed on Sunday, and residents had received evacuation notices, but many families were still in the area at the time of the collapse.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Dienabou Toure, who was present at the scene, promised to relocate the remaining families. Although Guinea has considerable mineral wealth, including the largest bauxite reserves in the world, the country remains one of the poorest in West Africa, with nearly half of the population living below the national poverty line.
