A 71-year-old man died on Tuesday morning after a boulder detached from the slope fell on the car he was in, on DN7, between the localities of Boița and Lazaret, in Sibiu County. There were two people in the vehicle; one of them managed to self-evacuate before the rescue teams arrived, while the man remained trapped and was found in a state of unconsciousness.
At the scene, ISU Sibiu and IPJ Sibiu mobilized a rescue vehicle, a SMURD team with a doctor, an ambulance, and the SMURD helicopter. The rescuers managed to extract the victim from the twisted wreckage of the car and began resuscitation maneuvers; however, despite their efforts, the doctor declared the death. The accident occurred at the exit from Lazaret, blocking traffic on DN7 around 8:30 AM for the conduct of rescue operations and the removal of the boulder from the roadway.
According to new information provided by the prefect of Sibiu County, Mircea Crețu, there were no safety nets installed in the area.
