On day 1662 of the war in Ukraine, British intelligence estimates that nearly 500,000 Russian service members have been killed since the beginning of the invasion, while Moscow’s total losses, including the wounded and missing, are estimated to have reached approximately 1.5 million. The assessments cover the period from the invasion launched in February 2022 to the present and point to an increasingly unsustainable human cost for Russia.

The head of the British Army claims that the majority of Russian losses were recorded after January 2023, although Moscow conquered only approximately 2% of Ukraine’s territory during this period. A US report estimates that Ukraine suffered between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties by June 2026.

On the diplomatic front, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Donald Trump to impose severe sanctions on Russia in order to limit its missile production. Vladimir Putin warned that deploying European troops in Ukraine would amount to “a war against Russia”. Meanwhile, Anthropic accuses hacker groups associated with Moscow of using artificial intelligence for cyberattacks against Ukrainian and European institutions.
