A drone show at the Vivid Sydney festival was marked by a serious incident when nearly 90 drones crashed into the water of Darling Harbour, causing confusion among the spectators.
The British company Skymagic, responsible for the show, stated that the crashes were caused by an unexpected change in radio frequency, which caused the drones to activate safety landing procedures. The festival organizers canceled two upcoming shows and apologized to participants for the inconvenience caused.
The show, called Star-Bound, included up to 1,000 drones and was set to last 12 minutes. Vivid Sydney, an annual festival dedicated to light installations, was founded in 2009 and claims to be the largest festival of light, music, ideas, and food in the Southern Hemisphere. Evaluations will be conducted by Skymagic and government agencies before deciding on the remaining schedule.
