In one of the most important cases to have appeared on the docket for expedited proceedings in recent years, a majority of Supreme Court justices blocked the procedure that would have granted the U.S. Postal Service the unprecedented power to withhold potentially millions of ballots that should have been sent by mail. Even some Republican election officials warned that the proposal could lead to chaos and mass disenfranchisement.

The decision represents a significant defeat for the president, who for years has vehemently criticized voting by mail, citing false allegations of widespread fraud, while he himself continues to vote by mail.
