The United States Supreme Court gave President Donald Trump a victory on Friday, authorizing the use of a federal database to verify voters’ American citizenship. The measure is part of the executive order signed last year by the Republican leader and targets the November midterm elections.

The database, created by the Department of Homeland Security, allows voters’ information to be compared with Social Security Administration records. The aim is to establish citizenship and eligibility to vote.

Lower courts had initially rejected the provision, but the Supreme Court subsequently upheld it. The decision represents a success for Trump, who has repeatedly argued that stricter checks are necessary to prevent election fraud.

The impact on the November election is nevertheless considered limited, compared with the president’s failure to restrict mail-in voting and the use of voting machines. Last week, the same court struck down stricter regulations on mail-in voting.

All seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of those in the Senate will be up for renewal in the midterm elections. The election will determine the balance of power in Congress, where Republicans currently hold a slim majority.
