The Vice President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Gilles Carbonnier, stated that Africa is facing over 50 active armed conflicts, which constitutes approximately 40% of the total conflicts in the world. Since 2020, the number of these conflicts has increased by 45%, resulting in the displacement of approximately 35 million people on the continent. Despite the humanitarian needs, the ICRC is facing a decline in international funding, caused by the dismantling of USAID and the reduction of contributions from OECD and EU member states.
Carbonnier highlighted the serious situation in Sudan, where a civil war has led to the destruction of the healthcare system and a severe humanitarian crisis. He also mentioned the resurgence of violence in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, emphasizing the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in this context.
