The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump intends to sell Israel $2.8 billion worth of munitions, according to a U.S. official cited by the Washington Post and Reuters. The deal, informally notified to relevant congressional committees, would include tens of thousands of 2,000-pound bombs, equivalent to approximately 900 kilograms, used in strikes with major destructive impact.

The package would contain 20,000 MK 84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The State Department and the Israeli embassy did not immediately comment on the report.

The planned sale comes amid declining public American support for Israel, particularly among Democratic voters, following the start of the war in Gaza in 2023. A Quinnipiac poll in June showed that 48% of American voters and 66% of Democrats consider the support provided to Israel excessive.

Bombs of this type have frequently been used in Gaza and Lebanon and have been criticized by human rights experts. According to health authorities in Gaza, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign. A UN investigation concluded that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, an accusation rejected by Israeli authorities.
