The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has led to over 2,500 deaths, and the United Nations' chief coordinator for Ebola, Julien Harneis, has warned that it is spreading exponentially.
Harneis stated that the epidemic covers a vast area, larger than that of France, and that the death toll is increasing daily, with half of the cases recorded in the last 20 days. The spread of the virus is outpacing the international response, intensifying faster than the efforts to combat it. The current epidemic has already surpassed that of 2018-2020, which was considered the deadliest in DRC's history.
Although there is no specific vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine have been sent for evaluation. The campaign to combat the epidemic is criticized for underfunding and lack of organization, and public trust remains low.
