The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing an Ebola epidemic, with 3,075 confirmed cases and 1,354 deaths since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15.
The epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, particularly affects the Ituri province, where nearly 90% of cases are concentrated. Authorities have reported an improvement in the detection and confirmation of cases, allowing for more accurate monitoring of the epidemic's evolution. Meanwhile, experts and health organizations are working on the rapid development of vaccines and treatments against the Bundibugyo virus, with the first volunteer receiving an experimental vaccine.
The current epidemic is the 17th in the DRC, and the deadliest occurred between 2018 and 2020, causing nearly 2,300 deaths.
