According to recent government statistics, the Ebola epidemic in Congo continues to worsen, with over 3,000 reported deaths out of 6,186 confirmed infections. The virus spreads rapidly, surpassing tracking and control efforts, and the situation was declared an international health emergency in May. The number of infections has significantly increased, spreading to six provinces, with higher mortality in the North Kivu area.

Recent assessments by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. highlight that control measures are insufficient. Medical staff are facing difficult conditions and strikes due to unpaid salaries. Factors such as conflicts in the eastern part of the country, violence against healthcare workers, and inadequate health infrastructure contribute to the rapid transmission of the virus.

The current epidemic could surpass the West Africa crisis (2014-2016), which led to 11,000 deaths. Although there are no approved treatments for the Bundibugyo virus, the Ervebo vaccine has been recently introduced for frontline workers, providing hope in controlling the epidemic.
