Kenya has recorded the first case of Ebola and the first death caused by this disease in the country's history. A Kenyan citizen who lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo died Monday evening in a hospital in Nairobi after traveling by road from Congo to Kampala and then arriving by plane in Kenya's capital.
The patient, who had been ill for approximately a month, passed the health screening at the airport because the medication allegedly masked his symptoms. Later, a relative transported him to the hospital, where he was admitted with fever, chills, and subcutaneous hemorrhaging. He was quickly isolated, but died late Monday evening. The funeral was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, in accordance with special protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.
Kenyan health authorities identified 28 people who had come into contact with the patient, including relatives and medical staff. They are also searching for 23 passengers and four crew members of the Jambojet aircraft on which he flew to Nairobi.
Kenya is maintaining a high level of alert and claims it is prepared to manage any potential cases. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its 17th Ebola outbreak, with approximately 8,300 cases and more than 4,000 deaths. The outbreak is associated with the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no proven effective vaccine or treatment.
