Before the confirmation in Nigeria, the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded a rapid increase, reaching over 5,000 confirmed cases and a mortality rate of 47.4%, then surpassing 7,000 cases. Authorities indicated that the spread had been difficult to detect in time, and the outbreak gradually expanded across several provinces.
During the same period, Ebola also crossed borders: cases were reported in Uganda and, for the first time in the country, Kenya confirmed its first death caused by Ebola. In the case in Kenya, authorities identified contacts and also tracked passengers and crew members of the aircraft involved in transporting the sick person.
