The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda has caused 1,001 victims, with 999 deaths in the DRC and 2,473 confirmed cases since the beginning of the epidemic in May.
In Uganda, there have been two deaths and 20 confirmed cases, but authorities have stated that there are no more active cases. The epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, does not benefit from a specific vaccine or treatment. A clinical study for two treatments began in July, and the WHO has authorized a molecular diagnostic test. The epicenter of the epidemic is in Ituri province, where most cases are concentrated.
Thierno Baldé, the WHO incident manager, emphasized that the epidemic is still active, with intense transmission in certain areas, and that priorities remain to control the situation in these regions.
The virus is also present in four other provinces, including North Kivu and South Kivu, affected by instability due to armed groups.
