George Cristian Tuță, mayor of Bucharest’s Sector 1, announced on Tuesday that he had notified the relevant authorities about the destruction caused in Victoriei Square during the violence. The authorities are expected to identify those responsible, who could be required to cover the resulting losses.

The mayor said the damage amounted to tens of thousands of lei and included uprooted plants, broken paving slabs and recently completed works that had already been damaged. Repair costs would likely be covered from public funds, effectively from taxpayers’ money.

George Cristian Tuță distinguished between the right to protest and acts of vandalism. He said he supports people’s freedom to express their grievances and defend their rights, but stressed that destroying community property is not a form of protest.

The mayor specified that the farmers who took part in the demonstration were not responsible for the damage and called for peaceful protests. The statements were published on Facebook on Tuesday, in the context of the violence that occurred during the protest in Victoriei Square.
