PSD MP Mihai Fifor called on Tuesday for the identification and sanctioning of the people who allegedly turned the farmers’ protest in Victory Square, Bucharest, into a conflict with law enforcement. The reaction came after the demonstration escalated, with several participants throwing objects and clashing with gendarmes.
Fifor said that farmers have the right to protest peacefully and express their grievances, but stated that their legitimate protest must not be used as a pretext for provocations or violence. The Social Democrat called for those responsible for the incidents targeting the gendarmes to be identified “urgently” and held accountable for their actions.
The MP said that farmers’ grievances are legitimate, but do not justify resorting to violence. He condemned any attempt to hijack the demonstration and called for the protest not to be turned into a confrontation with law enforcement.
Farmers are protesting measures affecting agriculture and are asking the authorities for solutions to the sector’s problems. The authorities are expected to establish the exact circumstances of the incidents and any sanctions that may apply.
