The avian flu virus is spreading rapidly in Europe, with 56 outbreaks reported in 10 countries in the EU and the UK between August and mid-October, the highest number in the last decade. Poland, Spain, and Germany are the most affected, and authorities fear economic damage and the risk of a new pandemic. Although the total number of outbreaks is lower than in 2022, when the worst avian flu crisis occurred, the early spread of the virus raises alarm bells.
Belgium and Slovakia have recently reported cases, and France has imposed strict measures, including keeping poultry in enclosed spaces. Vaccination of farmed ducks has begun in France, aiming to reduce the impact of the disease. Avian flu is also affecting other regions, including the USA and Asia, where millions of birds have been culled.
