At the cabinet meeting in Sofia, the Minister of Energy, Traicho Traikov, announced that a new scheme for reimbursing additional electricity costs will be sent for approval to the European Union and is expected to be launched in two to three weeks. According to the plan, the Bulgarian government will reimburse 50% of electricity costs when market prices exceed 63 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), with the measure being applied retroactively, starting from July 1, 2025. Regulated tariffs for households will remain unchanged, and Traikov emphasized that the current price levels are not a cause for concern, due to Bulgaria's large domestic energy production. The scheme will benefit from support of 125 million euros from the Energy System Security Fund, for the period July 2025 – June 2026. Authorities estimate that, considering last year's relatively low prices, expenses under the new mechanism will be limited in 2026.
