According to an analysis by Euronews, Romania is at the forefront of the European Union regarding the taxation of gross salaries, with 41.5% of the gross earnings directed towards the state.
This is well above the European average of 29.1%. In contrast, Cyprus has the lowest rates, at only 15.1%. Other countries with high taxes include Lithuania (39.1%) and Belgium (37.6%). The analysis also shows that for families with children, Romania continues to have the highest tax burden in the EU, at 33.4%, while the European average drops to 8%.
Germany shows the largest difference between the taxation of single employees and families with children, where the tax decreases dramatically. Economist Alex Mengden emphasizes that the analysis of labor taxation must consider both income tax and social contributions.
The data comes from Eurostat statistics for the year 2025, published in 2026.
