According to Eurostat data, Romania ranks among the European countries with the lowest final energy consumption per capita in households, occupying the seventh place in the EU in 2024. Consumption decreased from 400 kg of oil equivalent in 2019 to 390 kg in 2024.
The European Union has set the goal of reducing energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030, encouraging energy efficiency. Although in the first two years of the war in Ukraine there was a reduction in consumption, in 2024 a slowdown in this trend was observed.
European households have reduced energy consumption by 9% compared to 2019, and in 2024, the average consumption was 507 kg of oil equivalent per capita. The improvement in energy efficiency has led to a decrease in total energy consumption in households, despite the increase in population.
Additionally, a decoupling between economic growth and energy consumption has been observed, with energy productivity steadily increasing during the period from 2009 to 2024.
