A recent survey conducted by the World Gold Council shows that central banks are becoming increasingly reluctant to store gold outside their borders, relocating significant volumes of gold to their countries. France has withdrawn 129 tons of gold from the Federal Reserve in New York, while India has repatriated most of its gold reserves from abroad. This trend is fueled by geopolitical concerns and the desire to diversify storage locations. Although the Bank of England remains the largest gold bullion custodian, the percentage of banks storing their gold there has decreased from 64% to 57% in the past year. Political pressure from Germany and Italy for the relocation of gold reserves from the U.S. reflects a broader trend of reevaluating the role of gold in reserve management. Romania has 60% of its gold reserves stored at the Bank of England, using it as collateral in foreign markets.
