The British government has announced that, starting from February 25, 2026, all citizens from 85 countries who benefit from visa-free travel, including Romanians, will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom. This measure is part of an effort to digitize the immigration system and strengthen security checks at the border. The ETA can be obtained through the official UK ETA app, costing £16 and valid for multiple trips. Although most applications are approved quickly, authorities recommend a timeframe of up to three working days for additional checks.
The British Home Office has emphasized that carriers will check passengers' documents before boarding, and non-compliance with the requirements will prohibit travel. Since the launch of the ETA system in October 2023, over 13.3 million visitors have already used the new procedure. The Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, stated that the system enhances the travel experience and helps prevent access to individuals deemed a threat. British and Irish citizens are exempt from this requirement, but it is recommended that they have a valid British passport to avoid issues at boarding.
