The interim Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, announced that the Visa Waiver continues to be a priority in the bilateral relationship with the United States, emphasizing that Romania's acceptance into this program depends on political discussions, the reduction of refusal rates, and the administration of President Trump.

Țoiu mentioned that Romania has managed to reach the threshold of under 3% visa refusals, necessary to enter the Visa Waiver program, but emphasized that the situation is managed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. She also explained that, due to political changes and the suspension of the process before the elections, the number of refusals has increased.

Romania was officially included in the Visa Waiver program in January 2025, but in May 2025, DHS reconsidered this decision, despite Romania having met the legal requirements.
