Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said Monday that she had spoken in recent days with the U.S. ambassador to Romania, Darryl Nirenberg, amid information published by the Wall Street Journal about alleged American involvement in removing the Bolojan government.
Țoiu noted that, officially, the views of the United States in its relations with Romanian institutions are represented by the ambassador accredited to Bucharest. She also explained that the visit to Romania by the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, took place as part of a private business event, outside any mandate to negotiate or represent the United States in its relations with the Romanian state.
The statements come after the Wall Street Journal reported on a discussion held in Athens in March, during which Guilfoyle allegedly suggested that the United States could contribute to changing governments, also mentioning Romania. The information was linked to a meeting between PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, a former energy minister, and the American diplomat.
Grindeanu rejected the allegations, calling them political manipulation. Meanwhile, USR deputy Alexandru Dimitriu filed a criminal complaint for treason.
