PSD President Sorin Grindeanu denied on Monday that he had discussed concluding gas contracts during the meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, instead making several accusations against the dismissed government led by Ilie Bolojan.
The reaction comes after an article published by The Wall Street Journal, according to which the U.S. ambassador allegedly suggested that the United States had been involved in the dismissal of the government led by Ilie Bolojan and could do the same in any country. The meeting referred to in the reports allegedly took place in Bucharest, on March 31, at a restaurant, and was attended by Sorin Grindeanu, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, and presidential adviser Florin Vlădică.
Grindeanu said that he had been invited to that meeting and that “every time” he is invited to attend a meeting with an American official, he goes. He rejected the allegations of any agreement with the U.S. to dismiss the Bolojan government.
“Ilie Bolojan was not brought down by either the Americans, the Loch Ness Monster, or Bigfoot. He was brought down by the 88% of Romanians who said that the country was heading in the wrong direction and that the government was doing a poor job,” Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday.
The PSD leader also criticized the gas storage filling level, saying that it was below 80% ahead of winter. PSD said that the other information appearing in the press was “pure fabrication” and had not been discussed.
“I did not discuss gas contracts at any point. Not for a moment! Because it is not my responsibility. It was the responsibility of the dismissed prime minister, Ilie Bolojan, to ensure that Romania had gas, including for this winter,” the PSD leader also said, adding that Ilie Bolojan’s government had been the most “anti-American government since the Revolution.”
“I am fed up with these buffoons who have destroyed all the commercial relations Romania built with effort over the past several years,” he stressed.
