Siegfried Mureșan, following the WSJ revelations: Next week’s vote is an opportunity for the PSD and Grindeanu to prove that they are “good Romanians”

Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan asked PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu on Sunday to demonstrate through next week’s vote that the party had not been influenced by foreign interests regarding the governance of Romania. The reaction comes after an article published by The Wall Street Journal about statements attributed to the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, concerning the possibility of changing certain governments.

Mureșan said that Grindeanu vehemently denies the allegations and argued that the vote on the new government represents “the best opportunity” for the PSD and its leader to demonstrate their position. The designated prime minister stated that he wants close partnerships, on an equal footing, with the states of the European Union, the United States, and the other liberal democracies.

Sorin Grindeanu denied any agreement with the American side to remove the Bolojan Government and described the information as an “attempt at manipulation.” He mocked the allegations and argued that they are part of a political propaganda strategy.

The exchange of statements takes place ahead of the parliamentary vote on the new government and following the American publication’s report about a dinner held in Athens in March. The statements attributed to the ambassador allegedly suggested that the United States could play a role in changing certain governments, but the information sparked contradictory political reactions in Romania.
