Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs Oana Țoiu stated on Tuesday, after her hearing in Parliament, that she would not summon the US ambassador in Bucharest for explanations regarding allegations about the purported involvement of the United States in the change of the Bolojan government.
Țoiu said that the American ambassador had already clarified the US respect for democratic processes in Romania, just as Romania respects democratic elections in the United States. In her view, the relationship between the two countries must be based on mutual respect for citizens’ decisions.
The reaction comes after PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu asked her to invite the ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and request explanations from him. Țoiu described the move as “atypical,” arguing that the subject does not involve the official positions of the ambassador or the American state.
The dispute began with an article published by The Wall Street Journal, according to which the US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, allegedly suggested at a dinner held in Athens that the United States could contribute to the removal of the Romanian government. Her lawyer disputed the report. Țoiu stated that it is the dinner participants who must clarify the discussions that took place.
