Germany is preparing for a major transformation in road administration, announcing that starting in 2026, drivers will no longer be required to carry a physical driver's license. The federal government will completely digitize the document, allowing proof of the right to drive to be presented directly from a mobile phone. This change will simplify the road control process, eliminating the need to search for documents in wallets.
The legislative project is already in the implementation phase and will also include the digitization of the registration certificate through the i-Kfz application, which allows access to the vehicle registration on a smartphone. This innovation will bring not only convenience but also administrative efficiency, reducing bureaucracy and facilitating the lives of citizens, according to the Minister of Digitalization, Karsten Wildberger.
