The Romanian government has decided to adopt the German solution for the European Digital Identity Wallet (RoEUDIW), a mechanism aimed at ensuring secure and interoperable digital identification within the European Union.
The digital wallet will allow Romanian citizens to prove their identity and store electronic documents, having full control over their personal data. It will facilitate access to services in any EU member state. Key responsibilities have been established for the involved institutions, including the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will provide the mobile application. The project will be carried out in phases, with the first phase focused on implementing the application and issuing identification data. Romania will benefit from open-source technical solutions, thus saving budgetary resources and contributing to a collaborative European ecosystem.
In the future, the government intends to collaborate with certified private providers to expand the use of the digital wallet. Interested organizations are invited to participate in the development of this ecosystem.
