Romanians will be able to use RO Wallet, the European digital identity wallet developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, starting in 2027. The application will allow users to store official documents on their phones, prove their identity online and offline, and use an electronic signature, both in Romania and in the European Union.
The public launch will take place in stages. Starting in January 2027, holders of electronic identity cards will be able to enroll remotely by reading the chip using NFC technology and entering their PIN. People with traditional identity cards will be able to access the application from the third quarter of 2027, after having their identity verified in person.
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs between September 13 and 27, 2026, with 3,065 complete responses, 85% of participants said they would definitely use the application, while 10% said they would probably use it. The most requested documents are the identity card, indicated by 96% of respondents, the driving license, at 94%, and the health card, at 92%.
RO Wallet is expected to be used during traffic checks, at public institutions, doctors’ offices, pharmacies, and banks. In addition, 92% of participants said they would use it when traveling and at the border.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs will make the testing environment and mobile application available to partners on October 31. The project is being developed under the European eIDAS 2 regulation, and users will be able to check who has accessed their data and decide what information they share and with whom.
