CNAIR has begun testing the TollRo app, the new road-charging system intended primarily for freight transport vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3.5 tonnes. Rovinieta and TollRo charges will apply from 1 October 2026 on Romania’s national roads, expressways and motorways.
The app is available free of charge on the App Store and Google Play and allows the fee to be calculated based on the distance travelled, the vehicle’s weight and its pollutant emissions class. Users can pay online directly from their phones, check their passage and transaction history, and receive notifications about the network covered by the system.
TollRo is currently in the pilot stage, during which its functionalities and payment processes are tested under real-world conditions and adjusted based on feedback from users. The system is part of Romania’s Electronic Road Charging System, implemented under SETRE. The infrastructure was introduced on 31 August 2026, while interoperability with similar systems in the European Union is scheduled to become operational on 15 January 2027.
