Germany has announced that it wishes to extend the border control measures for another six months, until mid-March 2027. The German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, sent an official notification to the European Commission, confirmed by a spokesperson for the ministry. Dobrindt emphasized that recent events at Europe's external borders demonstrate the need to continue controls to combat illegal migration.
The controls were introduced in September 2024 and have been extended three times, the last time until September 2026. If the European Commission has no objections, the extension will be implemented, thus expanding security measures at the German borders. Criticism of these controls has increased, but authorities believe it is essential to protect national security.
