Germany has extended land border controls by another six months, until March 15, 2027, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Romanians check travel conditions before departure.
The measure applies to citizens traveling to, transiting through or staying in Germany. The Foreign Ministry recommends consulting information published by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Police, as the checks may affect waiting times and travel at the border.
German authorities justify the extension by citing the high level of irregular migration, the activities of migrant smuggling networks and pressure on the system for receiving asylum seekers. The notification sent to European institutions also mentions risks associated with Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as developments in the Middle East and Central Asia.
Romanians who need consular assistance can contact the Embassy of Romania in Berlin or the consulates general in Bonn, Munich and Stuttgart. Updated information is also available in the “Travel Safely” app.
The checks are temporary and are being carried out under European rules on the reintroduction of checks at internal borders in situations posing a risk to public order or national security.
