Germany’s transport minister proposes access controls at major train stations to improve safety

German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger supports introducing access controls at major train stations, so that passengers can reach platforms only after having their valid tickets checked. The measure would primarily target long-distance rail services and would aim to improve safety.

Bilger said the model could be tested and developed in Germany, but could not be adopted wholesale from France or the United Kingdom. In those countries, access to platforms is controlled at numerous stations through automatic gates and electronic ticket checks. The minister stressed that the historical structure and specific features of German stations require tailored solutions.

The proposal comes amid growing threats to transport infrastructure. Bilger cited attacks and attempted acts of sabotage targeting railways, energy infrastructure, waterways and air traffic. He called for more effective protection of sensitive facilities, rapid responses following incidents and the use of digitalization to identify problems.

The minister also announced that the installation of drone-detection systems at Germany’s international airports would be accelerated. The German air traffic control service has already been tasked with acquiring the necessary technology. Bilger warned that using a drone in a manner dangerous to air traffic constitutes a criminal offense.
